Birthday Fun

For my birthday this past Sunday, I decided the gift I would be giving myself was an instructional knitting book and a pair of knitting needles.  That’s right… for my 24th birthday I am going to teach myself how to knit! I taught myself how to crochet a couple of months ago and I’ve been wanting to learn how to knit as well.  I think it’d be nice to see something and say “I want to make that!”, regardless of whether it’s knit or crocheted. Also I’m kind of obsessed with having a million hobbies all at once so, it’s only natural I should pick up one more. 🙂

Stitch 'N Bitch: The Knitter's HandbookThe book I purchased was called Stich ‘N Bitch by Debbi Stoller.  It’s a great book! It has a lot of good commentary and very clear instructions on how to get started. It also includes a lot of cute patterns for different knit items.  I’ve so far not made anything of substance but I have been practicing and I think I have both the knit and purl stitches down fairly well (albeit I’m super slow) so I need to decide what I should pick for my first knitting project!

In other birthday news, my fiance got my a new cutting mat as my birthday gift.  It is HUGE and I totally love it.  I’m super excited to work on a 3’x4′ mat rather than the teeny one I had before.  It’ll make things much easier, especially when I have larger pieces to cut.  I’m very lucky to be marrying a man who can confidently walk into Joann Fabrics and purchase a cutting mat. 🙂

As much as I love my new cutting mat, the best birthday present was my mom coming up from Florida to stay with us this past weekend. We had a good time visiting family, including meeting my cousin’s new sweet baby girl.  We also spent some time crocheting together Saturday afternoon.  My mom hasn’t crocheted since she was younger than me but was easily able to pick it again and she made a cute little beer coozy to bring back to Florida with her.  It was nice being able to spend time together!

Now off to find some of that leftover ice cream birthday cake…

WIP – Squares & Stripes Quilt

I am currently working on another lap quilt for the living room using this tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew. This is a great way to use up fat quarters from your stash if you have a lot.  I chose to use a selection of blues, purples, grays, and a few pops of yellow for this quilt.  I love how little waste there is with the cutting of these blocks and the tutorial is super easy to follow.  This quilt top worked up very quickly; I finished it in just a few hours this past weekend.

Squares & Stripes Quilt Top

I had hoped to finish this by the end of this week, but have a lot going on including meeting up with some DJs for our wedding, a friend’s birthday get together, and possibly going snowboarding on Sunday with my fiance’s family. Perhaps next week!
